A pop-up is on screen
Read the answers, not the story. Each one lists what it needs and what it does; the events list has the same rows if you want to check before you commit. Take the answer that pays, unless what it costs is food out of the store or an item you were keeping.
An answer is greyed out
It is asking for something you do not have: a stat, or an item like Bandage Meds Life +20 500 g 2×1 cells $100 100 d shelf life Fuel 1500 Instantly restores a small amount of Life and removes Bleeding status. for an injury or Catfish Food · Fish Satiety +5 Morale -3 200 g 1×1 cells 25.0 Satiety/kg 90 d shelf life Waste at day 180 Fish Strange stuff, but edible when extremely hungry, right? for the cat at the door. 38 events gate an answer on a stat, an item, furniture in the house or an answer you gave earlier: Spoiled Food is the clearest case: its answer "Throw it away" needs Stamina at least 20. The pop-up waits, so fix the requirement and come back while there is still time on it.
I want to know what tonight can bring
Sort the events list by when in a run each arrives. 64 of them can come back, at 5%, 10%, 50%, 53% or 100% on a day they are open and 4, 5, 7, 10 or 12 days apart, except 3 that can return after 4 hours. A night is rarely empty once the first month is over. 14 can happen to any character; the rest belong to one story.
It expired while I was out
The game answered for you, and the list says which answer that was. On 31 events that answer pays nothing, and on 33 it takes something: Accidental Injury costs -20 Life and Limited Mobility when it is left to expire. An event that repeats comes back after its cooldown, but what the default took is already taken, so check the events list for the ones whose default charges before you plan a night out.
Open the events list Every event with its days, hours, chance, how long it waits, what each answer needs and what each pays.
What an event is made of
| What it says | What it means |
|---|---|
| A day window | The first day it can arrive, and sometimes the last. Before that day it cannot happen at all |
| An hour window | The hours of the day it can open in, which is why some only ever arrive at night |
| A chance | The chance it fires on a day it is open: 5%, 10%, 50%, 53% or 100% across the ones that repeat |
| A cooldown | Days before the same event can come back: 4, 5, 7, 10 or 12, and 3 that come back after 4 hours |
| A time to answer | 12, 18, 24 or 48 hours on 102 events; 12 wait until you answer |
| A default answer | The one the game takes when the time runs out: on 31 events it pays nothing, and on 33 it charges you |
| A condition | A state the run has to be in, most often an answer you gave to an earlier event |
What an answer can ask for, and what it pays
Every answer is scored the same way: it may ask for something, and it may pay or cost something. Both come from the tables rather than from the wording of the choice.
| Side | What appears in the tables |
|---|---|
| Asks for | A stat at or above a number, an item to hand, furniture in the house, an earlier answer, a day reached, food in store |
| Pays | Stat changes, survival points, items, a supply package, furniture, someone new to trade with, a random draw |
| Costs | Stat changes, items, an effect you carry for a while, and on a few events what is in the food store |
| Leaves | A mark a later event reads, or one step of a count that opens something later |
Survival points are worth naming separately: across every answer in the game they add up to 6 points, which is small against a run’s own settlement but free.
The ones that decide nothing
4 events have no answer that changes anything the tables carry. They are the moments a story turns on rather than decisions, and the list marks them so you do not spend a Morale check on them.
What to do
- Answer a pop-up the day it arrives. 102 of them expire, most within 12 to 18 hours.
- Read the requirement before the wording. An answer that asks for a stat is worth eating or sleeping for; an answer that asks for an item is worth a trip to the store.
- Never let an event with a paying answer expire: on 31 of them the game takes the answer that pays nothing, and on 33 the answer it takes charges you.
- Watch what an answer costs the food store. A few pay well and take what you had put away.
- Use the events list to see what the next month can bring, sorted by when it arrives.
Quick reference
- Events that ask a question: 120, 14 of them open to any character.
- Expire after: 12, 18, 24 or 48 hours; 12 wait until answered.
- Come back: 64, 4, 5, 7, 10 or 12 days apart, 3 after 4 hours.
- Gate an answer: 38, and 42 counting the ones whose gate the tables do not name.
- Default pays nothing while another pays: 31. Default charges you: 33.
